A few months back after several urgings from a friend that I might try putting my painting parties in an online format, I attempted the task!
One weekend, I worked on two different 16 x 20 canvases (with a color and a b&w variation) of a musical-themed piece called “Colorful Keys/Contours of Music.”
Later, I assembled my video instruction and commentary into a full tutorial, and an intro tutorial aimed to sell the party for $25 to individuals, groups and families. My intention was that a homeschooling family, or group of artsy friends, for example, could then receive the unlisted YouTube link for full access and would be free to watch/use repeatedly in the context of their home or group.
Putting the video together was a challenge, and I think that since then, my learning to speed up (3-4x as fast) painting demonstration sections would work well if I do this again. I have been putting various videos together to show and promote my work in other contexts. It is fun, and I also enjoy selecting free audio background music! (at very end, though unrelated, I will link a recent video made of a difficult portrait commission I’ve been working on since January…in progress, with some initial art musings about painting!).
I would still love to sell the two original Colorful Keys/Contours of Music samples I painted, and I’ve decided to share here for free the link with the full Painting Party tutorial. I would love for you and/or some family/friends to follow and paint along and then send photos of what you create that I might use to promote. But mainly, I would love feedback on how easy my instruction/comments were to follow and how I might improve…and a sense of the ages in your group.
If after trying out the tutorial and finding it helpful, you want to make a donation/gifting from your group, I would be open to that! Sometimes, I think businesses need to give out a few free samples to get things rolling. It always works at the fudge-and-candy stores at the beach, it seems!
Since I taught more advanced art in the past, I find it somewhat difficult to do a simplistic painting party project…it isn’t quite my style. But, perhaps that is a good thing for those out there who already have some art ability and are looking for something more complex but yet a step-by-step process.
